Walkin R. (Round) Baldwin, new to SM, wanted to participate in community activities and fundraising.  Someone mentioned SPERO.

Not knowing what that meant or how the foundation got started, he thought he’d start walking around to businesses and ask.
This is what he was told:  SPERO is Latin for HOPE. How did SPERO get started? Five friends with a common friend whose tragedy pulled them together with passion, desire, and the ability to draw together people and find resources to help others. When their participation as a group had been put on hold for two years, they decided as a group to get back together and start to make a difference again. All of them had been touched by cancer knew they have the ability to make something spectacular happen for this community. They decided that they could support others by providing financial, physical and emotional support to those in need and make a commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in our foothill community. We sat in a backyard and They are enthusiastic, they are big thinkers, they sincerely care about people, they think we can handle anything and they will give it a good try!

Walkin enjoyed his trip around town so much and met so many kind business owners and employees, he thought everyone should have the opportunity to do the same.  He found the Spero ladies and made that suggestion.
