Dry Felting, sometimes referred to as Needle Felting, is a relatively new art form that is spreading like wildfire!  Come and learn how to turn wool into a hanging or standing angel, a witch, a mermaid, or a fair maiden.  You will leave this class wanting to dry felt again! Jennifer is an accomplished artist who has been teaching Dry Felting for nearly ten years.  She has conducted classes and workshops in Georgia, North Carolina, California, and Hong Kong.

Drawing and Painting

 401M    WATERCOLOR BASICS AND BEYOND................. Robert Sherrill

Explore the basic techniques and concepts of Watercolor painting such as history of watercolor, color theory, composition, color mixing, brushwork, blending, glazes and other techniques. Emphasis is placed on developing skills and pursuing an imaginative and personal approach. Intermediate and advanced students may bring their work-in-progress and receive individual help. No class 11/1 & 11/8.

 402M    OIL LANDSCAPE PAINTING................................ Margot Lennartz

                                                           Mondays, 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Working from photos, sketches, or other references, students will discover and preserve their own personal style and paint application, and can work with a traditional to an extended palette. Color, light, design, composition, and style will be presented, as well as, brushwork (wet in wet/ a la prima/plein-air style). Previous painting, drawing, and/or sketching experience are beneficial. This is an 8-week class. No class 11/1.

Continuing Drawing provides an opportunity for students to expand on skills developed in Beginning Drawing. Students will further explore shading, color, and composition. No class 11/2.

This course will focus on the fundamentals of drawing: elements of line, composition, proportion, spatial relationships, perspective, volume, value, light and shadow. Students will develop their drawing skills using a variety of media such as pencil, pen, charcoal, ink, and chalk pastel. No class 11/3.

This class will cover the basic visual elements in painting (line, shape, color, composition, etc.). In addition to technical instruction, individual creativity and the spirit of experimentation will be developed. The history and issues of painting will be presented and encouraged. This class will benefit beginning as well as advanced students. No class 11/3 & 11/24

                                                      Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Various sites around San Gabriel will be painted on location.  Color theory, Composition and quick painting techniques are the main focus.  Atmosphere and depth are crucial elements in achieving believability and they will be studied extensively.  The student can expect to achieve a very direct approach to painting. This is a 5-week class.

We all have heard that old saying, "watercolor is the most difficult medium in painting"…well, Jim Burns would love to dispel that myth through his art classes which are aimed mainly at beginners and struggling intermediate painters. By following a few simple basic rules, we can create glowing, sunlit, fresh, delicious watercolor paintings…with minimal anxiety, frustration and tears. If you are in need of basic supplies, let Jim know early. He can provide, at minimum cost, the basic equipment to get you going on a magical adventure. No class 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/25. Learn line drawing, shading, and control using only a ballpoint pen on paper to create amazing works of art. This class provides a unique opportunity to become good at drawing by giving yourself the time and patience to learn to work with the medium. No previous drawing experience necessary. No class 11/4 & 11/25.

Ceramics and Sculpture

The emphasis in this class is on hand-building and throwing incorporating all aspects of the vessel: handles, lids, feet, etc. Students are also welcome to bring their own projects and receive individual help. Class meets 10 Mondays and 1 weekend day. No class 11/1.

Wheel and hand-building techniques for beginners and the experienced student will be presented as well as texture and surface decoration for high-fire ceramics. An introduction to low-fire clays and glazes can also be experienced if the student so chooses. Class meets 10 Thursdays and 1 weekend day. No class 11/4 & 11/25.

This class makes use of contemporary design basics in the creation of ceramic items. Decorative surfaces, modified forms, functional pottery and sculptural applications using stoneware and porcelain will be explored. Projects are for beginning and intermediate students. Basic ceramic tools will be used. Class meets 10 Fridays & 1 weekend day. No class 11/5 & 11/26.

Enameling

Enameling is a beautiful and ancient art form in which glass is fused to metal. The instructor encourages creativity and experimentation and introduces many different techniques for both the beginning and advanced student: stenciling, wet packing, cloisonne, bassetaille, and champleve to name a few. No class 11/4 & 11/25.

Z 420WS    TORCH ENAMELED BEADS.................................. Susie Kustner

                                                            Sunday, Oct. 3, 10:00-1:00 pm

Using a propane torch, copper tubing and a little enamel, learn to create beautiful, colorful beads. All  supplies are included in the class fee. Students will be able to create several beads to take home or take to the  workshop with Kimberly Nicholson (423WS) immediately following, and create a beautiful bracelet or pendant.

Other Artistic Expressions

Students will create several projects designed to give the beginner experience with the use of jeweler's hand tools and metal manipulation using copper and silver. Techniques taught will include torch soldering, creative casting, cabochon stone setting, and finishing. New projects will be introduced to continuing students. There is a materials fee of $50 payable to the teacher and minimal tools required which may also be purchased from the teacher. No class 11/2.

Our casting class is finally here! Students will learn four different types of casting and will incorporate soldering and fabrication skills into their pieces. A class in beginning jewelry is recommended before this class is taken. There is a $50 materials fee payable to the teacher at the first class. Tools can also be purchased from the instructor if needed. No class 11/3 & 11/24.

`Z 423WS    JEWELRY BASICS WITH BEADS.................. Kimberly Nicholson

                                                                Sunday, Oct. 3, 2-5:00 pm

We are offering a special workshop to help you make wearable jewelry out of the torch-made enamel beads created in the Torch Enameled Bead workshop (420WS), or you can bring your own special beads, or purchase them from the instructor. Students will use sterling silver wire and special findings and learn how to make earrings, bracelets or pendants. Materials can be purchased from the instructor.

424WS    MOSAICS FOR BEGINNERS............................... Dawn Mendelson

                                                Mondays, 11/15, 7-10 pm & 11/22, 7-9:30 pm

Create a 10-inch mirror using tile, glass and pottery with adhesive and grout. Students will learn the pique assiette style of mosaic. Course covers materials and tools, and cutting techniques. Bring an apron or old shirt to protect clothing. All materials for project are included.
