Light and Literature seeks to stimulate creative thought and expression in its viewers by connecting the inspiration of the written word to the recognizable beauty of the local
area. The intention is to transport the viewer to the scene by conveying a realistic and sometimes abstracted interpretation using a range of visual cues both stated and unstated. Visitors are invited to pause, meditate and enjoy the poetic and artistic inspiration found in the artwork. The exhibit is a collection of both watercolor and oils highlighting a fusion of influences – impressionism, realism and abstraction. The techniques ranging from pronounced brush strokes in watercolor to palette knives in oil are a response to the scene or the subject matter that initially attracted the attention of the artist. Each piece is underscored by a literary quote that represents the spirit of the painting and enables the viewer to create their story.

Artist’s Statement
“... and then I have nature and art and poetry, and if that is not enough, what is enough?” - Vincent Van Gogh
I feel Van Gogh was addressing those words directly to me.
As a self-taught artist who derives inspiration from my natural surroundings, I strive to capture light, shade and shadow in both oil and watercolor. Watercolor gives me
the freedom to be loose, airy and sketchy while the buttery spread of oil allows me to
capture the robustness of people, places and things. In color!
My daily practice extends to sketching, plein air painting and replicating the works of masters. My sketchbooks are a testament to my practice as they showcase my rudimentary thoughts and the evolution to a more finished painting. Studying my favorite artists, the impressionists in particular, has helped me recognize my style; and the inspiration for pursuing both watercolor and oil comes from many traditional and contemporary artists who express and excel in more than one medium.
As a learner, I have benefitted from many workshops led by established national and local artists and am grateful for their insights. Currently, I am honored to serve as the President of the Mid Valley Arts League, and as Vice President of Watercolor West. I served as the president of The Verdugo Hills Art Association for several years and have been part of a vibrant art community for the past decade. My artwork has received multiple local awards and been juried into several exhibitions including Watercolor West and the California Art Club. I’m a proud faculty member of the Creative Arts Group. Kudos to my students and fellow artists who continue to keep me on my toes.
